|
|
Unfortunately, high-quality criminal defense attorneys who boast solid track records tend to charge lots of money for their services. Although most lawyers technically bill by the hour, it's common for private defense attorneys to quote lump-sum fees for their services. These fees are based on these attorneys' past experiences with similar cases. For instance, a relatively straightforward murder case that requires the defense counsel to find just one or two witnesses to prove the defendant's innocence is liable to be inexpensive by most lawyers' standards. On the other hand, a more complex case with mountains of discovery and numerous witnesses is liable to cost several times as much.
While this number might seem shocking to those who lack familiarity with the trial process, it's important to put it in perspective. First-degree murder is a very serious crime that carries stiff penalties. Defendants who plead "not guilty" and lose their cases during the trial process face the near-certain prospect of a permanent prison sentence. As such, a defendant who lacks faith in his or her lawyer's ability to secure an acquittal should strongly consider pleading "guilty."
