Hoi An, Vietnam is one of the most popular of the Vietnam tourist attractions. Being a small town in Central Vietnam on the coast of South China Sea and located at the estuary of the Thu Bon river, it was once known as Faifo, a major international port in the 16th and 17th centuries, and the foreign influences are discernible to this day. Chinese from various provinces, Japanese, Dutch and Indians had settled down during the same period. While the serious shipping business has long since moved to Da Nang, the heart of the city is still the Old Town. Only until the last half of the 17th century, this place is transformed into a particular town of Dai Viet (Đại Việt - Vietnam formerly). In 19th and beginning of 20th century, in spite of political instabilities, Hội An was always a very animating market. During 1980s, the old city became a tourist point attracting visitors around the world.
Today Hoi An stands as an example of ancient architecture and is declared as a World Heritage by UNESCO for being one of the best preserved ancient Southeast Asian trading ports. This city always fulls of winding lanes and Chinese-styled shophouses, which is particularly atmospheric in the evening as the sun goes down. While almost all shops now cater to the tourist trade, the area has been largely preserved as is, which is unusual in Vietnam, and renovation has proceeded slowly and carefully - it's mercifully absent of towering concrete blocks and karaoke parlors. Here are some famous tourist attractions in Hoi An.
- Various small museums has become the highlighting the history of the region, especially ceramics, such as the Museum of Trade Ceramics. The Museum of Sa Huynh Culture was built in 1995, and has over 430 ceramic items from 8th to 18th Century. The items originating from Persia, China, Thailand, India and other countries are proofs of the importance of Hoi An as a major trading port in South East Asia. Some pagodas and churches are also worth a visit in Hoi An, Vietnam like Cao Dai Pagoda, Chuc Thanh Pagoda and the Hoi An Church.
- Many people believed that Phung Hung Old House which was built in 1798 is the most visited among all others. This three storied house has a mix of Chinese and Japanese structural designs and used to be a shop house of merchants. The other similar Old Houses in Hoi An, Vietnam are the 200 year old Tan Ky Old House, the well preserved Quan Thang Old House and the Diep Dong Nguyen Old House.
- Temples and Shrines are also the most visited places for sightseeing in Hoi An. The prominent among them are the Tran Family Worship House built in 1802 by the Tran family, the ethnic Chinese shrine called Truong Family Chapel, Japanese Tombs, Quang Trieu Assembly Hall and Phuc Kien Assembly Hall.
- Visiting Hoi An, tourists should stop at beaches, islands and lagoons.
Among the beaches the Cua Dai Beach famous for sunbath and fresh seafood is widely visited. Cham islands , a cluster of 7 island and Hai Van Pass with hills, valleys and lagoons are no less popular.
- Located 60 kilometers from Hoi An is My Son Holy Land, Vietnam this UNESCO declared World Heritage Site houses 17 temples and towers of 13th and 14th centuries belonging to the Champa people.
- Shopping in Hoi An will offer tourists a good selection of Vietnam art, handicraft and clothes with more than 140 shops in the city as in 2002. The cloth market is filled with small tailor stalls that are cheaper than shops elsewhere.
